The International Nanny Association is a non-profit organization that includes nannies, their employers and nanny agencies around the world. Offering services for those involved in the in-home childcare industry, conferences and information about continuing education, the INA has been a highly-respected institution since 1985. For nannies contemplating an INA membership, here are ten of the things you should know.
- Nanny of the Year Award – The INA presents the Nanny of the Year award annually to recognize excellence within the industry. The recipient acts as an ambassador, representing the professionalism and strength of the working nanny.
- Service Award Pin Program – Nannies, nanny educators and industry service providers in good standing with the INA can apply for the Service Award Pin after five years of employment within the industry.
- INA Nanny Mentor Program – Nannies who are just beginning their careers can find the industry to be a bit overwhelming at first; members of the INA are invited to participate in the Nanny Mentor Program to aid in development. An experienced INA member nanny is assigned to participants, helping them to understand the inner workings of the industry,
- Online Membership Directory – Access to the online Member Directory makes it easy for nannies in the process of relocating to make contacts in a new city and to network with other industry professionals.
- Logo Use – INA members will receive a high-resolution logo for placement on websites or resumes, showing that they have made a commitment to excellence within the childcare industry.
- INA Nanny Basic Skills Exam – There are two separate testing and certification options available through the INA: the Nanny Basic Skills Exam and the Nanny Credential Exam. For those who are new to the industry, a passing grade on the Basic Skills exam comes with the appropriate certification, which is a great resume-boosting tool.
- INA Nanny Credential Exam – For more seasoned nannies, the Credential Exam is an in-depth, proctored test. Due to the challenging nature of the Credential Exam, it’s highly recommended that those sitting for the exam have at least one year, or 2000 hours, of working experience.
- INA Annual Conferences – Each year, the INA hosts a conference for those within the industry to meet, network and learn new tricks of the trade. These conferences are a great opportunity for both new and veteran nannies to come together each year.
- Legislative Awareness – As an organization, the INA encourages members to maintain an awareness of pending legislation that affects the industry. The INA Governmental Affairs Committee acts as a clearinghouse for this information, helping nannies to contact their elected officials regarding these political actions.
- Discounted Services – Members of the INA have access to significant discounts on services, testing supplies and advertising through the organization.
Because the nanny industry is largely unregulated and without a standardized system for certification, an INA membership is one of the best ways to show potential employers that you’re committed to excellence. Taking advantage of their many services and programs can help new nannies to develop professional skills, and keep veterans abreast of changing trends.
