10 Must Try Skin Care Tips for Teens

The teen years come with plenty of challenges, one of which is keeping breakouts at bay and maintaining a clear complexion despite the hormonal changes that can spur skin problems. There are, however, plenty of things that you can do to keep your skin free of breakouts and looking its best. These 10 tips can make a real difference in your skin, and by extension, your level of confidence.

  • Don’t Over-Wash – Knowing that a clean face is a healthy face is one thing, but it’s just as important not to take that sentiment to the extreme. Wash your face in the mornings and evenings with warm water and mild soap. Going overboard by washing your face too often and using scalding water or harsh products can actually make acne worse by over-stimulating oil and sebum production.
  • No Squeezing! – It’s not easy to leave pimples alone, but squeezing, picking and popping them can all lead to greater inflammation, making them more noticeable and leading to permanent scarring. Make sure that you’re never squeezing or forcing blackheads, whiteheads or pimples, or you could make your complexion even more difficult to manage.
  • Hands Off – Wash your hands carefully before applying anything to your face, and make an effort to avoid resting your face on your hands throughout the day or touching your face excessively. Your hands can introduce oils, dirt and bacteria that clog pores and lead to blemishes.
  • Clean Your Phone – Just as your hands can make your acne worse, so can your phone. Because it rests against your face as you talk, collecting sebum, oils and debris, it keeps reintroducing those things to your skin. Make a point of cleaning oils, sweat or any debris off of your phone regularly.
  • Never Sleep in Makeup – After a long day, it’s tempting to turn in while you’re still wearing the makeup you put on in the morning. Overnight, that makeup can clog your pores and cause pimples, not to mention stain your bedclothes. Make sure that you always leave time to wash your face before bed, especially if you’ve been wearing makeup.
  • Pull Your Hair Back – Even clean hair contains a certain level of oil, which increases over the day. If you wear bangs, pin them back from your face before bed. Pull long locks back while you sleep to avoid contact with your skin and you may see a marked difference in your complexion.
  • Know Your Skin Type – Rather than using the same face wash and lotions that your friends use, take the time to figure out your skin type and purchase accordingly. Dry, normal and oily skin all have their own needs, so it’s wise to find the right products for your particular skin type.
  • Stay Out of the Tanning Bed – Not only does the fake bake from a tanning bed leave you looking unnaturally bronzed, it also wreaks havoc on your skin that can last a lifetime. In fact, up to 80% of UV damage that will be done to the average person’s skin over a lifetime occurs before the age of 18, so realize that your natural complexion is the best look for you. Make sure that you’re not only skipping the tanning bed, but also that you apply sunscreen every day, upping the SPF when you’ll be spending lots of time outside.
  • Skip Fragranced Facial Products – Unless the scent comes from natural ingredients, skip any facial cleansers, moisturizers or toners that have a fragrance. These chemical fragrances can be very harsh, actually leaving your skin in worse condition than before they were applied.
  • Remember to Moisturize – It may seem counterintuitive to wash oily skin and then apply a moisturizer, but you should always make a point of applying a moisturizer designed for your skin type. Even those with oily skin should be using light moisturizers to prevent over-drying that can lead to more breakouts.

Some skin issues can be cleared up with a bit of diligence and a quality skincare regimen, but it may also be necessary to see a dermatologist in certain situations. Talk to your parents about making an appointment if you have severe acne or other problems that aren’t responding to any treatment at home.
